MAP: Agencies impounding more cars from sober drivers at DUI checkpoints

Sobriety checkpoints are generating tens of millions of dollars in revenue for California law enforcement agencies, cities and counties. Police are far more likely to impound vehicles from unlicensed drivers than arrest a driver for a DUI. The Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley has been able to determine how often police officers are arresting people for a DUI and how often they are impounding cars.

In Montebello, for instance, officers have impounded 62 cars for every DUI arrest. In Fremont, the ratio is one impound for every DUI arrest. Click on each city to find the ratio of DUI arrests to cars impounded during fiscal year 2008-09.

The markers don't indicate where the actual checkpoints took place. Scroll to the bottom and click on "DUI checkpoints statewide," which will take you to a bigger map, as well as a list along the side of each community and the number of vehicles impounded per DUI arrest.

So did all of these new homeland security purchases make the state safer? That’s difficult to tell, according to Inspector General Skinner. His federal auditors found that California couldn’t evaluate improvements in its ability to respond to disasters and thus demonstrate how the grants have made a difference, a conclusion also contained in several other watchdog reports published this year that were critical of the Department of Homeland Security’s major grant programs in general.

It's ok to do such a thing to prevent car accidents from sober drivers, it may be risky but this is for the benefit of drivers and their cars to prevent wreckage (auto parts damage from wreckless car driving) and some serious accidents.
